Stormy Week

We have had a week of storms. I love storms, and so do the Storm Birds (nickname for Asian Koels).

The other day, as storms approached, so did my Storm Birds to the trees behind my place.

catch me if you can
I wandered down with the hope of getting a decent photo. I have been trying for a couple of years to get a photo, but they have a knack for hiding behind branches and stuff.  Why they’re remarkable, beside their bird calls, is what they do. They are what is known as Brood Parasites. They lay their eggs in other birds’ nests, and those parents raise the chick as their own.

Anyway, I’m standing under the tree it’s perched in, camera raised above my head – shutter ½ depressed to lock focus  – for 10 or 15 mins. At this time a neighbour approached enquiring what I was doing. With cramps starting in both shoulders, I was glad for the distraction.

you move...I'll move
I was explaining my efforts to get a photo of this bird in flight, and what it was & what it did & blah, blah, blah, and it flew off (Bugger).
As it turned out I was lucky to be down there, as a Nankeen Night Heron landed in the Mangroves behind the tree. I have only seen this guy 1/2 a dozen times in the 10 years I've been here.

Rare visitor - Nankeen Night Heron
Back on the veranda waiting for the storm to hit, I noticed a Lorikeet jumping thru the long grass.
Now this is unusual, so it caught my attention. I thought poor bugger has “Runner Disease”. A disease where their tail feathers fall out – and is fatal.

What happened next amazed me.  It hopped up to the She-oak, and proceeded to walk up the trunk. Without the use of its wings (although it did flutter them twice to keep his balance). He not only walked up the trunk, but took the 2nd branch on the left to explore.

It then made that squawking “Feed me call” that young birds do. I then realised it wasn’t a tail-less Lori, but a young bird that hasn’t grown one yet.  It could fly (as on sunset it flew off with mum), but certainly was more comfortable walking.

these boots were made for walking.....

Cedrick
Cedrick, what is he doing?

The next day he appeared in the same tree with his sibling. They were inseparable. If they sat, it was shoulder to shoulder. When one went for a bit of a walk the other followed.

And they were curious.
When taking photos of them they couldn’t take their eyes off me.

Then we played a game.
I would move to get a better angle, and they would jump & rotate so they couldn’t see me.

I would move to in front of them again, and they would again show me their back. Not wanting to stress them, I left.

Cedrick, will you protect me?

Now for my Family’s update;
Boss just loves a neck scratch
They have all been hungry of late, well hungrier than usual. I’m guessing the chicks are getting bigger and needing more food.

Queued up

In this video, I need an Air Traffic Controller. We have Bashful who is doing “Touch & Go’s”, Boss, Brave Baby & Bully Baby all on different flight paths. And it ends with Bully Baby taking out her wrath on my finger.
You would think there would more mid-air disasters, but these guys have great reflexes.
It's the quick.....
....the near miss

and the hungry

Whereas they used to have a bit of a feed & fly with off with some, now they consume the lot. I can only guess that they offer up most of their catch during the day, before I give them a feed later in the arvo?
This is the call they make when they intend to take their morsel back to the chicks. Note how it excites Brave Baby & Bully Baby (both females) into chasing him.
I have noticed of late Bully Baby is more acceptable to being hand fed. She has always been aloof, tending to grab meat in the air (a trick she learnt). Most times if you approach her, she would fly off.
She has always been a headache for the others (truly suited to her name), but of late she’s had the “Dirt’s” with everyone. No one is spared her scorn.
Now she is trying it out on me.
And let me tell you, when she latches on she hurts. The photos show she is so bloody obvious in her intentions.
sizing me up

Sorry, I missed - twas an accident

She is 1 determined bird

Well that's it for this week.

Bloody Hot Days

We’ve had some bloody hot days of late (35 - 40c). My bird bath at this stage looks to be a “White Elephant” (7 weeks and still no visitors).

Well, you know that old saying “you can lead a bird to water”
If they wouldn’t enjoy the bird bath they might enjoy a hand spray.
Well, as turns out, some do (Brave Baby) & some don’t (Bashful) & then there is Bitey.

Loving it

hating it
hating it 2
and then there's Bitey

Here is a video of how the 3 liked the experience.
An Australian Darter landed in the tree behind my place.

Well you should have seen the reaction, and it was immediate. Birds appeared from everywhere to harass it.
What surprised me was who the protagonists were. Not birds I would’ve thought of coming into conflict with a Darter.
They were; 7 Noisy Miners, 2 Indian Mynas, 2 Peewees, Lorries, 1 Willie Wagtail, 1 Dove, 1 wattle bird.
And a Kooka pissed off with all the commotion.

A Darter is a water bird. It swims & dives down after fish. They don’t have waterproof feathers (this allows them to swim underwater), so they need to get out & dry off. These are the birds you see with their wings outstretched, drying themselves off.
The way the others reacted, this was a definite threat.
He got more treatment than the low flying Sea Eagles get.
He isn’t a threat to the adult birds as they are too big to swallow (except for maybe a Willie), so I guess he’s a chick eater.
I know the Willie Wagtails nest in the mangroves & possibly the others. A Darter has webbed feet, so not really suitable for climbing thru mangrove branches. So I suspect he grabs chicks that fall out of nests.
its not the size of the dog in the fight...Willie in action
next in were the Peewees

L-R: Indian Myna, Noisy Miner,
The Kooka chicks must have hatched by now (I can't wait till they're presented).
The girls do seem to be the poorer carers.
I've been cutting the meat in shorter strips more suitable for little chicks and feeding this to the crew.
They all seem to feed on the smaller cuts, with the boys flying off with some of the longer strips.
I'm not sure if they're feeding the sitter or the chicks, but, the strips they fly off with are about 3cm x 1/2cm. Mouthful for a bub.
Mum (Bashful) turned up after the storms looking wet & miserable, so I decided to send her home with a full belly and enough for the bubs.
Well, she ate the lot. Her last piece was a big strip. She sat there with it in her beak for a few minutes until there was enough room in her tummy to swallow it. The bubs got none.

Anyway that's all for this week.

What a tumultuous week it’s been.

Stand to Attention..........Eyes Left
Big Highs – Big Lows

I’ll start with the “Highs”.

There is no doubt that my birds are with eggs, as Mum turned up today to show me her Baby belly.

Mummy Tummy

My goal this week was to catch some birds flying towards my camera that I could present in slow motion videos.

I have a tree next door loaded with Lorikeets. I have noticed that when they fly off, they quite often use the same flight path (swooping low to the ground to gain speed before flying to some palm trees on the other side of my place. Watched dozens do this.
So the plan was to set up my camera in their main flight corridor, and get them flying towards the camera.
Well, you know that saying about working with” Kids & Animals”. Of all days to camera shy.

I did however have 2 fly past the camera, giving me hope (and some footage)

The next morning while having coffee on the veranda, planning how to better catch these Lorries, I noticed a Willy Willy Wagtail land on a post 100 meters down the reserve I back onto. He did this repeatedly.

didn't read the script did she

So armed with camp chair, camera on a stick, off I set. Camera set 12 inches from post…..now let’s see if he’ll play the game. Unlike yesterday, the Gods smiled on me.

I got ½ dozen landings.

Helicopter landing

While I’m sitting the in shade of a tree with my remote, I got pissed on from above (some say this is good luck – well it was for me).

I looked up to see a Lorrie munching away above my head. He was saying “Take my photo, I’m so much better looking than Willy”.

I obliged.

Tell me there's no intent in those eyes

Pumped, I couldn’t wait to get back home to see what I had caught.

I get back home, I’m on the veranda, preparing to get my camera out of its housing so I could upload to the pc, when I get this feeling of being watched.

Above me is Bashful perched on the top of my A frame. She is watching my every move.

We then played a game of “Peek-a-boo”.

Boring whole’s in the back of my head

Normally I would use my camera with its head mount so you could see what I see, but it was still attached to the rod. So holding the camera next to my right shoulder we played the game. What I didn’t realise until I uploaded it, that because I was holding the camera on my right side, the view of him looking at me when I step to his left is hard to discern. But the video gives you the general jist (that was the little “Low”).

I'll bet you lean to the left when you watch this :)

Now for the “Big Low”.

After splicing, adding slow motion, adding background music it was ready to publish (David Attenborough eat your heart out)

I thought I might get some more stuff in the morn to add, then publish.

Well, during the night my computer upgraded itself from windows 8 to 8.1. Now my editing software doesn’t work. Not only that, it corrupted the video I did the night before.

I did manage to get 1 video done today, but it took 2 hours to save a 30 second file.

So hopefully, if I can sort out this issue, I might have some more SloMo stuff for my next post.

An inquiring mind

I hope you enjoyed this week’s post.
